UI Charitable Advisor’s partner, Terraformation, is scaling one of the most effective solutions to climate change: global reforestation.

Recent research published in the journal Nature shows that forests in regions with a low human footprint have the potential to capture 226 gigatonnes of carbon.

Terraformation founder Yishan Wong says that this amount is roughly a third of the carbon in the atmosphere since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. According to the study by ETH Zurich, 61% of this carbon potential lies in protecting existing forests while the remaining 39% can be achieved through forest restoration and sustainable ecosystem management. Conservation and reforestation efforts have the potential to increase carbon credit availability and dramatically decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

To achieve this carbon reduction, responsible restoration focused on biodiversity is essential. This is where Terraformation comes in. Local forest carbon teams around the world often face bottlenecks in their reforestation efforts. From equipment and seed supply to training and financial vehicles, Terraformation provides local projects with the resources to restore their forests with local, diverse species.

The first cohort in Terraformation’s accelerator program has graduated. Two additional cohorts are in process with the fourth open for applications. A promising future is in store for Terraformation and natural carbon capture.  UI Charitable Advisors is grateful for the opportunity to work with such an innovative and dedicated partner.
